Tommies

I finished clinics relatively late today. Labour ward in the morning and then experiencing the vastness of personalities in the genitourinary medicine clinic. St. Thomas' Hospital being situated in the centre of Britain's capital allows a cosmopolitan blend of origins and diseases to be observed first hand. Working in here would only be a dream! Best thing for me is the views that I'm always taken aback by. Overlooking the Thames and Westminster time & again I become awed by the splendour of London's architecture. As far as the wards are concerned... very good esp the Birth Centre! I just came back from my peripheral attachment in HUKM, KL two weeks ago and it was indeed a good educational experience being allowed to do things hands on there, but once I saw the labour room here... wow! They even have a garden in the ward! Believe me ladies, if I ever get pregnant I wanna have my baby here.. (fat chance!). There are pool rooms for water births, big big windows in your room for all the natural lighting you could ask for, but most important of all, respect for your autonomy and privacy. Ok, I don't wanna brag. Just decided to blog out something and post the pictures which I took as I was coming out of the hospital. oh and one more thing: I love my Motorola V3x - 2megapixel camera with quite acceptable colour reproduction for something that can fit in a pocket. Anyone else on Three? Ed doesn't quite like it coz it aint as slim as his v3. *sigh* u can't please the whole world can u?

Overlooking the Thames. Quite serene, no? Notice the clouds seem to be originating from Big Ben.
Oh well..after a long day sights like these make it all worthwhile. Too bad parts of the House of Commons are being restored hence the dark area..

well Qisti, I honestly don't expect to be able to do any here - nak compete dgn student midwives? might as well not. but whilst in Malaysia I was lucky enough as all the other medical n midwifery students were having exams so after several observations n assists I managed to do three(one with an episiotomy - just step up to it man) and several placentas too. Well, PRHO jobs in O&G are scarce anyway and we have our midwives pun so unless u'r into O&G i wouldn't really go hyper bout it.

dear kerol,

its not being hyper about anything, but the thing is if i dont get it done now, when will i get the chance to do it again? esp bcause i plan to do my fp here and be back home for my masters..ive heard from a few regs and SHOs who didnt do any during med school and sampai skarang they dont know how to do it..so to me it was a very good experience... and btw theres no PRHO jobs in O&G..they start at SHO. and when u say scarce do u refer to all of the O&G jobs? as far as i know (after a chat with one of the regs), its just the labour ward jobs that are significantly vacant, in which the hours are not friendly at all.i dont think the bbc highlighted correctly the issue of vacancies in O&G recently..(sorry to budding obs&gynaecologists - i do hope im wrong)..

currently GMC requires us to do 3 while in med school, so ther u go, uve done 3!..plus, an epiosotomy, that makes u way better than me, heheh..a lot of us envy u dude..

the way i look at it,being hyper in medicine esp at med school is good for myself - while some ppl might say "yeah i didnt get any and u got 14 deliveries done..so what?"..but the more experience gained, a better doctor ill be in the future, sounds reasonable doesnt it? of course theres lots and lots more to the equation but yeah just to keep it simple. i guess the same applies to any other profession..just dont go overboard and of course i wouldnt get hung up with the one delivery i did..

cheers

well put Qist. yeah I do agree with what u say, echoing back that the more practice one gets the more proficient one should, hopefully, be. and of course not everything is textbook.

Opportunities could come with luck, it could also come with how much one really wants, how persistent he is to push 'luck' his way.

honestly i didnt know GMC had the '3 deliveries' requirement. hmm.. it's interesting how the SHOs referred to managed to qualify without doing any. i presume it's a new thing? hmm, in that case i am lucky to have just met this requirement. *phew!*

maybe it's a St. Thomas' thing that there are PRHOs in for their O&G rotation. I definitely met one, and my O&G consultant definitely did say "yes, we do have a couple of PRHOs for our team," of course this was news to me too! =)

There are those who go thru this degree memorizing textbooks. There are those to that don't do their reading and go for their hands on patient experience. Of course these are the 2 extremes. I guess one could say it's about balancing the two - having enough knowledge to know from evidence the causes and which management is best, evidence based, with the confidence and empathy for a good patient-centred approach.

hmm.. and rai, yeah, V3 is an amazingly stylish sleek phone but i do hear it's complaints. if only they included a external memory option. what do u think about the V3i?

lawa gamba tu kerol, the second one.. for me it doesnt matter what camera u use as long u know how to use it well. i consider having an SLR as a bonus.. =D, to those who do not have the privilege of full manual controls, dont lose heart..theres 1001 ways to get the great photo u want regardless of what camera ure using..

3 things cardinal to producing superb photographs

1) decisive moments
2) lighting/exposure
3) composition

ingat those things always then photography will be more&more interesting. the world is your playground! muahaha
